Wednesday, October 7th, 12pm, Reitz Union 283 Thursday, October 8th, 4pm, Reitz Union 285 Monday, October 12th, 3pm, Reitz Union 285 Tuesday, October 13th, 12pm, Reitz Union 283.

H1N1 Information

The University of Florida encourages students to follow the CDC recommendations regarding H1N1. The CDC recommends that people with H1N1 or influenza-like illness remai at home at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100° F [37.8°C]), or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications. Because most cases of H1N1 do not require medical attention, students may miss class due to illness, but not have the appropriate medical documentation. Faculty have been asked to be flexible with those students who have followed these guidelines and chosen to remain at home even if they do not have the proper medical documentation. Please be advised of the following recommendations and policies regarding class attendance, assignments and the H1N1 virus:

STUDENT ATTENDANCE
Students with fever should not attend class and should remain at home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever.

POLICY ON MAKING UP WORK
It is the policy of the university that students who have been ill should be afforded the opportunity to make up work that they have missed due to their illness. While most faculty members have adopted standard procedures for such situations, the anticipated volume of students who may contract swine flu may challenge normal course logistics. Faculty may wish to consider modifying their normal procedures to deal with the possibility that 25% to 40% of students may be ill at some point during the fall semester.

TEACHING CONTINUITY
In order to assist with delivery of instruction under these circumstances, the University is providing a number of asynchronous options for faculty and students. These options include, E-Learning, Mediasite, Elluminate and other tools and contacts that can contribute to teaching continuity. Faculty are encouraged to use these tools, where applicable.

The Career Resource Center (CRC) will host Foreign Service Officer and University of Florida of graduate Paul Ghiotto (B.A. 1999, B.S. 1999, J.D. 2004) to discuss internship and job opportunities with the U.S. Department of State on Friday, September 18 at 3pm in the CRC classroom, first floor of the Reitz Union.

The presentation will discuss undergraduate and graduate-level internships and fellowships, the Foreign Service Officer Test and the various jobs available with the State Department.

New Web Page on Sexual Harassment

A new web page on sexual harassment has been developed especially for students as part of the Division of Student Affairs web site. It can be accessed at http://www.ufsa.ufl.edu/students/sh/sexualharassment.shtml.

The purpose is to gain a better understanding of sexual harassment, to prevent it from occurring on campus, and to facilitate reporting an incident which has unfortunately already happened. The webpage includes sections on sexual harassment FAQs, Myths and Facts, Resources and Reporting. It also provides access to an online educational program designed for students on Preventing Sexual Harassment, made available through a collaborative initiative with Human Resource Services.

The Reporting section informs students of the role that University Officials (Faculty, Staff, and designated student employees) have in their obligation to report any knowledge of sexual harassment (including criminal sexual harassment/sexual assault) of students to the appropriate campus agencies. Student resources for confidential consultation are provided along with information about how students can make a formal report.

Florida Department of Motor Vehicles on Campus

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will be bringing their mobile unit to campus. They will be located at the UF Bookstore & Welcome Center in the hallway outside of the Gator 1 Card Office on August 24-28 and August 31-September 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Services available include obtaining original, renewal and duplicate driver licenses and identification cards; completing address and name changes; tag renewals; handicap placards; and submitting your emergency contact information into their secure database.

Minus Grades Effective Summer 2009

In accordance with the Faculty Senate resolution of December 14, 2006, the University of Florida’s grading scale will be changed to include minus grades effective the Summer 2009 term. This change became effective with the SUM A 2009 term (the Gator Times incorrectly reported last week that this change began SUM B). The decision was made in order to provide faculty with more options for assigning grades and to more accurately reflect the grade earned by the student.
