Florida Alternative Breaks’ Summer Trips

Are you having FAB withdrawal? Or have you never been on a service-oriented alternative break trip before? Well, you’re in luck! FAB is sending out three summer trips August 10th-August 16th. The trip issues are Homelessness and Poverty, Environmental Sustainability, and HIV/AIDS. Apply now and be a part of an amazing group of students who all strive to make a commitment to community service, leadership, and social change.Participant applications will now be accepted on a rolling basis and are to be turned into the CLS in the Dean of Students Office (where you can find applications). Panel Discussion of Non-Profits Organizations and Social Services in Gainesville, Tuesday, July 8, 7:00-8:00pm, Reitz Union Rion Ballroom.Come learn about the Gainesville community and the work of non-profit organizations in town. Many first-year students get involved in community service early in their college career, and this is one way to learn more about some of the current issues, opportunities, challenges, and career paths for non-profit leadership.

Panel will be moderated by Jeanna Mastrodicasa, Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs. Themes: involvement in the community, active citizenship, and local issues.

In order to provide additional assistance in making your transition to UF, New Student Programs and the Division of Student Affairs presents the Featured Speaker Series. These speakers will cover areas of college life and touch on subjects that students will encounter during their college careers.

Camp Kesem 5K for Kids

What better way to burn off some stress and some calories during finals then to run a 5K? Help children whose parents have been affected by cancer. Come to the Camp Kesem 5K for Kids on Saturday, April 26, at 8:30AM. It will be lots of fun and GREAT exercise. Advance registration is $15 for the general public and $10 with a valid Gator 1 ID. The race will begin promptly at 8:30AM, and registration will start at 8AM.

Photos for Africa is an initiative started by UF student, Brandi Hill. Brandi will be returning to deliver school supplies to the children at the Mmadikoti School in Sand Sloot, South Africa. Peaceful Paths Domestic Abuse Network is looking for good, working condition household items such as beds, furniture, dishes and similar items. Students can contact 379-3133 or 377-5690 for more information. This is a great way to support a local non-profit as the collections and pick-ups also require energetic volunteers. Donated items are given to needy individuals and families that Peaceful Paths serves in the community. Moving can be a chore, but if you find yourself with too much stuff then do a good thing and donate.

Community 5K Challenge

On April 16th, Leadership Gainesville 33 will host a Community 5K Race for Charity at Ironwood Golf Course. The race will benefit local non-profit charities Tyler’s Hope (http://www.tylershope.org/) and Junior Achievement (http://www.jaalachua.org/).
