The Institute of Black Culture (IBC) in conjunction with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. will be hosting a viewing of the CNN Special Report: Black in America on Wednesday and Thursday at 8PM in the Orange and Brew. Prior to the viewing, there will be a brief discussion related to various issues relating to the Black community, both nationally and at UF.

Monday, July 21st, 2008: Jill Lingard; 7:00-8:00pm, Reitz Union Grand BallroomIn 2006, 19-year UF advising veteran Jill Lingard dropped out of normal life for five months and attempted a 2,175-mile thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail. What do endless climbs of mountains, bear sightings, stinky fellow hikers, floods, and freeze dried food have to do with university life? Quite a bit, actually! Come hear Jill’s entertaining story of AT adventures and the meaning they may hold for your own college journey. Themes: time management, making the most of your experience, and self-reflection.

Solar Energy Seminar

Sunfiniti, Inc. of Gainesville, Florida will be holding a Solar Seminar at the SFCC Gymnasium on August 7th - 8th from 8 am to 4:30 pm to bring awareness and to educate about solar energy, energy conservation and renewable energy resources. Seminar will include an exhibition with the latest in solar technology and speakers from USF, FAU, Sun Power, Nova Ray and GRU. Come learn about the current status of the solar industry, education and manpower requirements; solar energy fundamentals, applications and systems. Student Fee: $35 per person. David Sutton & Casey SchmidtIn the Spring of 2008 a semi truck ran over UF PhD student Casey Schmidt while he was riding his bike to campus. Firefighter/Paramedic David Sutton arrived on scene to find that Casey was still alive thanks to his bicycle helmet. Hear from both Casey and David as they retell the details of the accident as well as help provide basic safety tips that may one day save your life too. The University of Florida Symphony Orchestra is holding string auditions on Monday August 25, 2008 that are open to ALL UF students, undergraduate and graduate, regardless of major. The 2008-2009 season is set to be an exciting one with repertoire including Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Respighi and also full performances of Bartok’s ballet, The Miraculous Mandarin and the Puccini opera, Tosca. The Orchestra meets Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Music Building from 1:55-3:50. New Video Exhibition at the Harn

Experience an innovative all-video exhibition entitled “Cross-Currents in Recent Video Installation: Water as Metaphor for Identity” at the Harn Museum of Art. This exhibition presents recent video installations by five international artists with ties to Africa. The artworks are large-scale and some works contain unique sculptural components—one being a pool of water below the screen to reflect the video image and the other a layer of soil with inscribed words. Each work uses water as a symbol for many concepts including family, identity, violence and spiritual transformation. On view through Sept. 7, 2008. Free admission. www.harn.ufl.edu

Second Annual Midnight Fun Run

Healthy Gators 2010 & RecSports invite all students, faculty, staff and guests to participate in the Second Annual Midnight Fun Run on Thursday, April 24 starting at the O’Connell Center. Participants can run a 5K or walk a one-mile “Lake Alice Loop” route. Pre-registration is open through April 21 at Southwest Recreation Center. Pre-registration is $10 for Gator 1 cardholders and $20 for non-Gator 1 cardholders. On-site registration will be available the night of the event for $20. Registration includes a T-shirt, Gators wristband and a hot breakfast at Gator Corner Dining Hall following the run.
