The University of Florida Symphony Orchestra is holding string auditions on Monday August 25, 2008 that are open to ALL UF students, undergraduate and graduate, regardless of major. The 2008-2009 season is set to be an exciting one with repertoire including Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Respighi and also full performances of Bartok’s ballet, The Miraculous Mandarin and the Puccini opera, Tosca. The Orchestra meets Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Music Building from 1:55-3:50. New Video Exhibition at the Harn

Experience an innovative all-video exhibition entitled “Cross-Currents in Recent Video Installation: Water as Metaphor for Identity” at the Harn Museum of Art. This exhibition presents recent video installations by five international artists with ties to Africa. The artworks are large-scale and some works contain unique sculptural components—one being a pool of water below the screen to reflect the video image and the other a layer of soil with inscribed words. Each work uses water as a symbol for many concepts including family, identity, violence and spiritual transformation. On view through Sept. 7, 2008. Free admission. www.harn.ufl.edu

Florida Players is pleased to announce the second production of its Spring 2008 season, Marisol. Marisol, winner of the 1993 Obie Award for Playwriting, will be making its Gainesville, Florida premiere at the Phillips Center Blackbox Theatre (315 Hull Road, Gainesville, Florida 32601) from March 21 through March 23. Show times for this limited engagement are March 21 at 8 p.m., March 22 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and March 23 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The performances are free and open to the public.

19th Annual Florida Invitational Step Show

The Black Student Union will be hosting the 19th Annual Florida Invitational Step Show, “Licensed to Step” on Saturday February 23rd at 7pm. One of the largest step shows in the Southeast, the show has had a history of innovation and ingenuity. Tickets sold in advance to UF students are $12 (plus service charge), and to the general public are $16 (plus service charge). Day of the show tickets are $21 for both UF students and the general public. Tickets are available at the University Box Office, all TicketMaster locations and FYE in the Oaks Mall and Paddock Mall.
