Beware of COVID-19 Scams

Filed under Administrative, Information Tech on March 30, 2020.

Unfortunately, cyber criminals are preying on the fear and uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Gators, stay vigilant and keep an eye out for these scams:

  • Fake emails from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization offer incorrect information about the virus.
  • Websites and apps that appear to track the virus infect and lock victims’ computers.
  • Fraudulent fundraisers on GoFundMe and social media platforms use stories and images of real victims to lure people into donating.
  • Linked promotions of products claim to prevent, treat and, cure the virus.

Please follow these precautions:

(1) Do not click on links in unsolicited emails, and beware of attachments.

(2) Only visit trusted online sources for news like UFL.EDU and CDC.GOV.

(3) Never send your personal or financial information.

If you think an email in your UF inbox is a phishing scam, forward it to abuse@ufl.edu.
