The Dangers of Free Wi-Fi

Filed under Administrative, Information Tech on October 28, 2018.

Getting a latte and studying for a few hours at your favorite coffee shop sounds like a productive fall day, but there’s a catch. The free Wi-Fi networks that you join when you’re off campus are at high risk for cyberattacks. Hackers often disguise themselves as popular and public networks like “Starbucks Coffee” to trick you into unknowingly providing your banking information and social media passwords. When a long list of networks pops up on your screen, think before you click and always ask an employee for the official network name. After connecting, be cautious about using websites that require a login like Canvas, Instagram, and your bank institution.
