Whodunit? The Role of the Rural Population in Post-Roman Economic Development discussion is Thursday, January 26 at 5 p.m. in Marston Visualization Lab (L136).

The fall of Rome and its societal consequences are often perceived as one of the European continent’s most severe crises. How Europe overcame the collapse of the Roman state in the West has been the subject of continuous debate. In this talk, Frans Theuws will discuss the role of the rural population in the economic recovery of northwestern Europe and explain how popular historical models have obscured the role of rural dwellers in economic growth.
