The UF School of Theatre + Dance presents The Divine: A Play for Sarah Bernhardt. The Divine will be presented by Jan. 27-29 & Feb. 3-5, 2016 in the Constans Theatre located in the Nadine McGuire Theatre and Dance Pavilion on UF’s campus. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Jan. 27, 28 and Feb. 3-4 and at 2 p.m. Jan. 29 and Feb. 5. Written by Michel Marc Bouchard and translated by Linda Gaboriau, The Divine is based on an incident that occurred while Bernhardt was visiting Quebec City in December 1905. The archbishop of the Catholic Church tried to have both her and her company’s plays banned on the grounds that they were immoral. Taking place in a seminary, a factory/workshop, and even outside the stage door of Bernhardt’s dressing room, Bouchard’s play depicts the disquieting effects of Bernhardt’s visit on two young seminarians who possess widely conflicting views about life, religion and art.
