Celebrate and learn more about accessibility and inclusion with these two events.

The Inclusive Sports and Fitness Expo is Wednesday, October 26 at Plaza of the Americas from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This interactive, large scale expo event is designed to bring awareness to the UF community about the importance of accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities. This fall’s expo theme is “Inclusive Sports and Fitness.” The expo is designed to promote the social perspective of disability.  The social perspective of disability believes that people with disabilities are less restricted by their own impairments than by barriers imposed by society. This new perspective has supported people with disabilities to access and participate in all levels of society, including sports. Using momentum from the recent Paralympics games, the expo invites the campus community to consider their perceptions of disability while also highlighting the importance of physical activity for everyone. This expo will highlight the many resources at UF and in the Gainesville area that offer inclusive sports and fitness. Its aims to decrease the stigma of disability, highlight differently abled people in sports, and change public attitude towards those who experience disability.
The Accessibility and Inclusion Panel: Inclusive Sports and Fitness is Wednesday, October 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. at  the Rion Ballroom in the Reitz Union. Athletes who play different sports will come together as panelists to weigh in on the importance of adaptive and inclusive sports and fitness and why these sports programs should be celebrated! As the culminating event following the Inclusive Sports and Fitness Expo held earlier in the day, this panel will highlight the benefits of inclusive sports and fitness activities for not only individuals with disabilities but for all people who value creating a more inclusive environment. The panelists will also brainstorm ways in which UF can continue to create a community that welcomes everyone.
