Global Challenges Speaker Series: Myanmar/Burma and the U.S. Pivot to Asia with Michael E. Thurston

Filed under Academic, Events on March 21, 2016.

In November 2015 the military junta that has been ruling Myanmar with an iron grip allowed the first free and fair election in more than a quarter century, allowing Noble Peace Prize recipient, Aung San Suu Kyi’s National  League for Democracy to peacefully take power.  Is this the beginning of that rare peaceful transition to democracy from a military rule? Why did the junta in firm control of Myanmar decided that now is the time for a transition to democratic rule and an open economy? The U.S. has played a seldom discussed, but critical role in the junta’s move towards democracy as part of President’s Obama’s realignment of U.S. foreign policy interests, sometimes referred to as “The pivot to Asia”.
