Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Opening Ceremonies this Week

Join the University of Florida in the campus-wide celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King.

Celebration events include:

  • Opening Ceremony and Candlelight Vigil on Wednesday, Jan. 13 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Institute of Black Culture (on 15010 W. University Ave. next to Chipotle)
  • MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 18 at 8 a.m. at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
  • MLK Celebration Keynote Speaker, Dr. Nikki Giovanni on Tuesday, January 19 in the Reitz Union Grandballroom. A Distinguished Professor of English at Virginia Tech, Dr. Giovanni is an award-winning poet, author, and civil rights activist. Giovanni remains as determined and committed as ever to the fight for civil rights and equality. Always insisting on presenting the truth as she sees it, she has maintained a prominent place as a strong voice of the Black community. Her focus is on the individual, specifically, on the power one has to make a difference in oneself, and thus, in the lives of others.
