Gillig Hybrid Buses Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Filed under Athletic & Health, Events on July 16, 2012.

The City of Gainesville Regional Transit System is proud to announce the addition of two 40-foot Gillig Hybrid low-floor buses. RTS will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, July 18 at 10 a.m.  on the University of Florida campus at the Plaza of the Americas off Union Road.

Purchased with funds from the UF Campus Development Agreement (CDA), each one cost approximately $600,000. The electric/diesel hybrid buses will run on a B20 bio/petro-diesel blend fuel and will increase fuel mileage by 20 to 30 percent. The electric charge will come from regenerative braking, like passenger vehicle hybrids. RTS is one of only two agencies in Florida to run buses with the blended fuel. The other is Palm Tran in Palm Beach County.

The Gillig Hybrids have orange and blue paint – a new scheme compared to the rest of the RTS fleet. Inside, the bus seats are blue with an embroidered Gator Head logo.

With a capacity of 72 passengers, the new buses are scheduled to run on Route 46 – UF to Downtown this coming fall semester.

Please join UF Wednesday, July 18 at 10 a.m. as we celebrate the roll out of the two new Gillig Hybrid buses.
